Hi Retired_Member,
1. Please check on your laptop's user manual or manufacturer to confirm that the laptop supports the 5GHz band. You can indicate the laptop model number in order for us or others to help out in the confirmation.
2. If the laptop does indeed support the 5GHz band, please make sure that the drivers for the adapter is up to date.
3. You can also try changing the channel for the 5GHz band.

Ok not to be rude or anything but...
1. I don't have the manual with me.
2. It's already too late, I was only staying at some apartment which had a netgear router and I'm not there anymore.
(Sorry for the terrible capitalization on this whole conversation, I was only using it so it wouldn't be embarrasing.)

Your laptop will tell you which wifi bands it supports. And the Internet is also a help it tracking down these things. Or tell us the model number of the laptop and someone will be able to find it for you.
Look for the wireless bit in network adaptors and see what that says. It will give you the details you need to find out the capability.
The biggest clue is that if it does not see 5GHz wifi, while other devices do, then it doesn't support it.
