Getting Wired

How do i hardwire my laptop and smart tv to the router or modem?  I'd like to get rid of all wifi in the house.  My desktop computer connected fine directly to the modem using a 6-something cat ethernet cable but my laptop and smart tv are being more difficult. I have an adapter on my laptop so that it will accept an ethernet cable yet it's still a no-go as far as recognizing any sort of network. Do you know each step I need to do for my laptop and smart tv to connect without wifi?

    what modem/router are you connecting them to?
