Help my daughter game better (R6050 = 30 Mbps wireless but 400 Mbps wired)

I have only recently upgraded my Spectrum cable to a reasonably current speed (400 Mbps).  Before I had a "legacy" (time warner) account that gave 25 Mbps.  Now with a decently fast internet connection, I am seeing my NetGear R6050 only deliver 30 Mbps throughput to wireless devices (laptops and desktop) in my home.

My main computer is connected through a docking station and ethernet and I am getting a solid 400 Mbps there.  A few feet away is my daughter's gaming PC (she recently moved home) and we just put a good tp-link dual-band wireless card into it.  Signal strength is fine (router is line-of-sight and about 12 feet away).  That computer is still only getting 30 Mbps like our older laptops which use unknown wireless cards.

Using this firmware

V1.0.1.26_1.0.1

At some point in the past I had set a specific channel on the 5ghz (153) but changing that back to auto really did not improve anything.

I'd really like to improve the throughput for my daughter's gaming.  And no, I am not running an ethernet connection for her...  😉

  • Try connecting the PC via ethernet cable to the router. Ethernet wire is recommended for most gaming PCs and consoles.
    CAT6 LAN would be recommended.

Thanks for the quick reply.  Wife does not approve of the cable.  (We resorted to that for the Harry Potter game release download though).

Oh, I should say that currently my main concerns is with throughput not so much with latency.  I realize that some games really need low latency...  We're not dealing with that right now.  Just download speed!

Are you actually connecting to the 5ghz band?

That's key as 2.4ghz is a slow network.

What link speed do you have on the devices connected to 5ghz? (hint, link speed isn't actual throughput speed. Throughput tends to be 55-65% of link speed)

One other thing is the R6050 is the most basic gigabit router netgear sells. It isn't going to max out a 400mbps connection. If you want to fully utilize your network speeds, I'd upgrade to something from the current generation that is half decent  (doesn't have to be a flagship device).
