HELP PLEASE - Netgear WNDR 4500 N900 - Internet LED Not lit?
I have recently acquired a Netgear WNDR4500v1 N900 from Ebay as an upgrade to my current Netgear WNDR3700v4. My broadband provider is Virgin Media and I have the HUB3 router, it is set so wifi is tu...

My question is this, does the newer router require a certain type of ethernet cable to operate or do you think the router is just broken/malfunctioning?
No and probably Yes.
A cable that works with one router will work with another one, especially as we are talking about a pair of dinosaurs.
The WNDR3700v4 (2015) is a bit younger than the WNDR4500v1 (2013). As you have already been told, the main difference between them is in the slightly better N900 wifi in the WNDR4500, rather than the N600 in the WNDR3700v4.
If it is just the Internet LED that refuses to behave, either the thing is bust or your setup is wrong in some way.

That does not disable the router in the Hub 3. In any case, that would mean that you have worse wifi than the Virgin hub delivers.
Your arrangement could also land you in tricky territory that has tripped up many people.

michaelkenward I have enabled 'modem' mode in the HUB3.
Ideally I would prefer a Netgear router that still uses the genie web interface as that is what I'm familiar with. Which 'newer' Netgear router would you recommend?
Is the AC type wifi router newer that the N type?
Is the R6300 AC1750 any good?

Reset the wndr4500 when powered on, press the reset pinhole with paper clip for 30 seconds and see if that helps. Then after the reset connect the ethernet cord to the internet port on the wndr4500.

Does that mean that it is on modem only mode? No router features turned on?
That's the easiest way to get these things to play nicely with another router.

Yes. Your existing Virgin hub is pretty old, but it has AC1600 wifi, unlike your two older Netgear routers, which are slower on the wifi front than your Hub 3. The Hub 3 has generally higher specifications than the Netgear routers.

What do you want to do with this interface? The mobile genie for Android and iOS was withdrawn some years ago. All newer routers have the Nighthawk app.
Which 'newer' Netgear router would you recommend? It depends on what you want to do. Why do you think you need another router?
You already have a capable source of wifi in the Hub 3. If the idea is to get wifi into places that the Hub 3 cannot reach, then you may need an extender rather than another router.
Is the R6300 AC1750 any good?It is an ageing device, near the bottom of the Netgear range, with wifi specifications much like your Hub 3.
