horrible Netgear genie and parental controls
Ok, I just bought this N750 to upgrade my N600 today cause I couldn't get the inborn parental controls in the N600 to operate. apparently it is a toss of a coint if it works on the N600. So I boug...
Yes you remove Genie and log in the router by a browser by loging into 192.168.1.1
I call it malicious because it was taking over my control of setting up my network. So possibly supper annoying us a better term to may down right painful to use. I actually was able to utilize the ip address and directly set up the network that way and parental controls do seem to be working without genie or open dns installed.
Utilizing open dns was also horrible because it kept flaking out, I would type in an address and it would stop adding terms after a list of two.
I have used netgear for years because they used to be straight forward and easy to set up even if you weren't a networking genius and without the need for a separate running application. But that seems to have changed. I will be doing a larger network update later this year and it looks like I may have to start researching for new equipment that doesn't have the need for a separate app

Genie is not needed to setup a netgear you have to go back the browser log in. I like the old way whether a software program anyways because no matter who's router and install and setup program there will always be a problem. Netgear is not only company that runs in problems with their coding in the programs that they use.

I prefer to set things up myself, and as William10a points out you don't need to use Genie.
I don't use parental controls myself, but I do know that the built-in controls only work with http, not with https. Which makes them basically useless (my opinion, not Netgear's).
