How to use WNR2000 as an access point

Hi

I have just bought a Netgear WNR2000 and need to operate it as an access point as I already have a router that is connected to the isp WAN.

How do I confiure the WNR2000 as an access point. The other routers is WNR854T?

Also, if both routers are step up as router how can I access a NAS that is on one router via the other router?
Regards

  • To set up as an access point do these things in this order; 1. Configure the wireless rate, channel and security as you want them, 2. Set the ‘access point’ IP address to an address on the subnet of your LAN e.g. 192.168.1.200, disable DHCP then click apply (in the LAN Settings page), 3. Connect nothing to the WAN (Internet) port, connect by cable from a LAN port of the ‘access point’ to a LAN port of the router. 4. Change the DHCP range of the router so that it ends at 192.168.1.199 The second part of your question doesn’t apply to the above, but if you did have these two routers in series with both operating as routers then you would need to change the subnet of one of the routers to a different Private subnet, and you may get away with accessing both subnets by setting up static routes, but I’ve never had need to try that arrangement so can’t be sure.

  • You do not use basic setting ... ignore it.

what is the diff between setting a static ip address under basic vs setting a LAN ip address in advanced.

Under LAN setup you specific the router device IP. basic setting for WAN so ignore it
  • great it works now! thanks.
2 main take aways i think...

    1. you dont use or change the wan settings of the AP device , just the LAN IP address
    2. you need to remember to give your laptop a static ip address if you want to connect it to the AP device after you disabled dhcp

Not if there's still a DHCP server on the LAN and the AP has a LAN IP address, the laptop with a DHCP address will be on the same network and so will be able to reach the AP.
  • I think it meant during the initial setup to access back in after disable dhcp and saved uou loose the connection before adding to existing network
  • If you go about it in the right sequence, there’s no reason to set a static IP for the computer. For the initial setup the PC gets its IP from the router (soon to be AP), and once the router is configured as an AP and connected to the LAN, the PC then gets its new IP from the LAN.
  • No. If you disable DHCP and saved, for most people would expect to get back in the GUI which does not

Yes , if you ignore after saved and immediately you plug to existing network but most would wait because you message rebooting ...
  • That's all? It is truly sad A company this big can't come up with an easier solution before they release a product.

This is a long-dead thread (back to July 2014).  No need to resurrect it, so I am locking it.

Current Netgear routers have a built-in AP mode.
