This is a community forum, not Netgear support.
Head to https://netgear.com/support type your product model number (e.g. like R7000P) and grab the documentation - there are Quick Start, Do More guides, User Guides. And no, there is no need to use an App (it can be just convenient): The minimum you need is a Web browser to configure your whatever new router, connect your computer either by Ethernet to the router LAN port, or establish a wireless connection using the pre-configured network name and try to open http://routerlogin.net/ - this will show a prompt for a username and a password - use: admin password
For support, head to https://my.netgear.com/ register your product, and contact support.

Well, this was a big help.
So much for the "free 24/7 customer support".

Thank you. I just got off the phone with my internet service provider tech support and he helped me do exactly that. The app is a bad idea and not even needed. I wasted 4 hours trying to do it by their instructions. But everything works now.

I ran into the same problem. If the box had said *anything* about needing the app, I'd have downloaded it back when and where I purchased it. Netgear seems to incorrectly assume that 100% of the US has cell service. It doesn't. The *only* directions with the router implied that I needed the app. I'd have figured out the above fairly quickly; it's been 8 years since last I installed a router back, but I remember how you did it the old days (the implication that I *needed* the app left me assuming that as technologies change...). Their online support merely mirrored what I had in the 2 page quick start pamphlet - download the Nighthawk app to get set up. I'm already disappointed that the outside of the box lists system requirements, none of which even hint at a smartphone, but that the nighthawk software is only an app that does not have a PC or Macbook based version. I'd return it to the store on general principles if there was an alternative there, and I don't want to wait a couple days for Amazon to deliver one. So, again, I thank you for providing the help above that you did.
