I just received the following email and am hesitant to click on any of the links, wary that this could be a scam. My main reason being that it states they are trying to fix a critical firmware issue ...

I received the same email just a few minutes ago and hit the Web to verify its content, which is how I found this thread.
I then poked around the Netgear website and found this page that describes how to go into your router's webpage and check for any firmware (or fimrware, since even business communications with typos sometimes escape into the wild) updates for the router:
Page Title: Installing the latest firmware on a NETGEAR router

Do not update your firmware. This is a scam run by netgear. They send this email to peopke whos warranties on their product is expired so when you download and install update it causes you to lose internet connection,so when you call them to resolve this they tell you your warranty is outdated and refuse to give you the fix until you purchase an updated warranty for your router. Its a total fraud/scam and they need to be reported to the better business buraeu

I honestly do not remember whether I downloaded the firmware update last year when I received the email that triggered my original post. I did get a similar email a week ago. I came to the site and drilled down, figured out how to check to see if my router really did have a firmware update, and went ahead and installed it. My warranty and customer service period are long expired but the install went seamlessly...and I'm still here online. Did you reboot the router after installing the update? Reboot the computer?
