the router might be 5 years for you but that device was manufactured 13 years ago. i was released in 2008.
You might try reinstalling the firmware to it in case the version its on was corrupt. A reset only clears out settings.
thats something you can try.
but it might be time to look at an upgrade for that router. Its quite far behind on technology

I appreciate the reply and that's great perspective. That seems ancient. I will look for a new combo unit to replace this --- speed is too irregular -- I just tried another test and it got up to 46 down / 2 up on one machine, 12/1 on another, and 30/2 on a third. So ... yeah irregular. Thanks again.

Also to note, sometimes the power adapters go bad causing the router to lose wifi and connection to the modem. I have had routers have those symptoms before and when I tried a different power adapter my problems dissapeared

A power supply isn't a bad option to try. but if you don't have one from something else to try, I wouldn't buy one. The money would be better saved for upgrading. Again, its a bit old of a devices.
Make sure you have the exact same voltage and polarity. You can have higher amperage though
