After the router powers up, is the internet light lit on the front of the router? It should be under the power light and above the wifi light.
If it is lit, what color is it?

Have you been through the setup process from fresh.
Can you login to the interface of the WNR2000?

or

Have you checked the settings for your ISP login?See page 1-7 of the manual:
WNR2000v1 | Product | Support | NETGEAR
See page 7-6 for troubleshooting the "amber light" issue.

That means it is not acquiring an IP address from the modem. Obviously your PC was able to do that when you bypassed the router. I suspect you aren't using PPPoE - if you were it's unlikely that bypassing that router would have worked unless you also set up the PC to use it.
If michaelkenward's suggestions don't help you might try reseting the router by inserting a paperclip into the reset slot in the back (above the LAN ports). That will bring the router back to factory settings, so you will need to set it up again after that. http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/WNR2000V1/WNR2000_SM_07May08.pdf
