You are correct. Cat5 cable from my laptop needs to go to LAN not WAN connection on router. Once I switch connections I was able to access the WNDR3400 with no problem. thanks for your patience and help.

WNDR3400[v1], WNDR3400v2, or WNDR3400v3? Look at the product label.

Why? Are you trying to replace the R6300v2, or add the WNDR3400 to
your existing network for some reason or other, or what?

"R3400"? "WNDR3400[vX]"? "R6300v2"? Other?
Aside from the model-number confusion, that sounds like a very
incomplete description of what, exactly, is connected to what, exactly.
A cable has two ends. (Hint: If a device has different types of
Ethernet ports, then "connected to device" is not enough detail.)

One way would be to disconnect the "R3400" (whatever that is) from
everything except its power adapter and one computer. Once you start
connecting multiple router-like devices together, things get more
complicated. "More complicated" is different from "impossible", but
without some basic information about how this stuff is connected and
configured, specific advice (better than guesswork) is tough to provide.

What, exactly, said what, exactly, when you did what, exactly?
None of that is a useful problem description. It does not say what
you did. It does not say what happened when you did it. As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.
Are you using some web browser or other, with some URL or other, on
some computer or other, connected somehow to something (or not?)?
Assuming that you're trying to add the WNDR3400[vX] to your existing
R6300v2 network to extend its wireless network coverage, you might want
to configure the WNDR3400[vX] as a wireless access point. Sadly, the
details of that task might vary, depending on which which
hardware/firmware versions you have. If it's a "v2" or "v3", then visit
http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look for
Documentation. Get the User Manual. Look for "AP Mode". For a "v1",
it should be possible, too, but perhaps more complicated.

I have a N600 WNDR3400 (V1 I'm guessing since the label just says WNDR3400 with no version number. Unknown firmware version since I cannot get access to the WNDR3400 router to determine.) that I'm trying to configure (as a wireless access point to extend my network into a metal out building so I can add some IP cameras in the out building. (I know there will be performance degradation, however that is acceptable to get camera coverage).)
I have the WNDR3400 hooked to my laptop with a CAT5 cable (from the WAN connector on the WNDR3400 to the ethernet connection on my laptop. Laptop is on the Genie R6300v2 network and recognizes the LAN connection from the WNDR3400) however when I go to http://www.routerlogin.net on my laptop using Firefox it shows the R6300v2 access page (window says "Authentication required - http://routerlogin.net is requesting your user name and password. The site says:"NETGEAR R6300v2").
My question is how do I get to the WNDR3400 configuration page so I can configure it as an access point? If I disable wifi on the laptop in an effort to "disconnect" from the Genie R6300v2 router (and have only the WNDR3400 connected as described above with the CAT5 cable to the laptop) and try to get to http://www.routerlogin.net with Firefox on the laptop, the laptop displays a page that says it can't find the NETGEAR server.

That looks like an ISP-specific (Charter) version. Atypical, but

At least one of us is confused. Any WNDR3400 client devices should
be connected to the LAN ports of the WNDR3400. The WAN/Internet port
(if it's used at all) would be connected to something closer to your
ISP. That would explain why you can't get to the WNDR3400 management
web site from your laptop -- the WNDR3400 would see that as "Remote
Management", which uses a different URL, and is disabled by default. If
you connect the laptop to a _LAN_ port on the WNDR3400, then you might

That should be possible, but, as threatened, the "v1" might make it
messy. I'd fetch the WNDR3400v2 User Manual to see the easy way -- Look
for "AP Mode" -- and verify that you don't have that option on your
"v1". Assuming that you don't, then you should be able to use the

That's written for a C6300-as-WAP, but the steps are about the same for
any other router (any make/model) which lacks a one-step WAP option.
Note that that scheme leaves the WNDR3400 WAN/Internet port unconnected.
(A WAP is all-LAN. A model with the one-step WAP option effectively
reconfigures its WAN/Internet port as another LAN port. Without the
