Netgear Genie connection is unstable

Genie is unstable connecting to internet.  ALL the other computers and droid and iPhone in the house connect to WiFi through the modem without problems.  The PROBLEM seems to be with the Netgear Genie on the computer used to install and configure the modem in the first place.  It is always a major pain to connect and takes at least 5-10 minutes of attempting to reconnect using Genie and even then, it's rare that the connection is steady.  Are there any other programs I can use instead of Genie since ALL our other computers and phones and friends computers can connect to internet without problems (none of the others use Genie)
