It is possible that your firmware was the original release. That is usually left in the library, but if it caused problems Netgear may be removed it.
If so, you are running on five-year old firmware.
Your first move would be to install the newest version.

It is a pretty safe process. It should not let you put the wrong firmware on your router.
That may not fix your problems, but ancient firmware certainly won't help.
