NETGEAR R6230 & Sony Bravia W700B 5GHz issue
Hello, This is my first post here. I have bought a NETGEAR R6230 AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit router. It is working fine. However, there is a bizarre issue occuring between my Sony Bravia W70B and 5 GHz...
Turns out it is the TV's limitation. Once the TV is connected to 5 GHz it turns off the WiFi Direct as intended. If you want to turn WiFi Direct on it gives a message saying while TV is connected to 5 GHz it cannot turn WiFi direct on, however if WiFi Direct is turned on even after this, then the TV will be disconnected from Internet and Home Network. If WiFi Direct is turned on, my laptop can detect and stream/mirror stuffs through it.
So, it was not an issue. It is a limitation from the Bravia side.
So, if someone wishes to stay on 5 GHz, but wants to mirror or cast his/her stuffs through PC and/or mobile then they have to sacrifice the internet while the WiFi Direct is turned on. Staying on 2.4 GHz clears away all these hassles. I guess newer gen TVs dont have such limitation.

The sales pitch suggests that WiFi Direct is an alternative to the various "cast" technologies. As this is a Sony technology, its support channels might be more helpful.

The TV? The wifi?
It is interesting that the TV supports 5 GHz. Most older stuff is restricted to 2.4 GHz. You say "when the TV was connected to 5 GHz it was a bit faster". Is that a perceptible difference? Or just reading the label? If it works as it should at 2.4GHz, why not stick with that? 2.4 GHz may be slower, but it has a longer range and is less likely to lose the connection.
When the TV is connected to 5 GHz the laptop cannot see The TV. When I click connect to wireless display it keeps searching and nothing appears. I use a 3rd party app called iMediashare to stream my personal iPhone photos and videos. It too cannot detect the W700B alongside the mobile youtube app. I use the NETGEAR Genie mobile app and in the network map I saw when the TV is connected to 2.4 GHz the link rate is 130 Mbps. It is 270 Mbps when it is at 5 GHz band. Now, I mostly use the youtube app on my Bravia. I saw the app thumbnails on Home menu and the video thumbnails on the app slightly loads faster than when it is on 2.4 GHz. The TV sits right beside where the router is. There is absolutely no problem using the 2.4 GHz with the TV. It just got me curious as to why this behavior when TV is connected to 5 GHz since the TV wont move from the room unlike the phone or laptop. May be there are some limitations that can best be explained by Sony community.
