My old setup worked until my router died. Setup was: Internet---> Asus router ----->computer1 ----->computer2 ----...

It should be plug and play.
Is anything behind the switch able to get an IP address from the R6400? Is the R6400 in router or AP mode?
Try testing the switch. Connect computer1<----TP-Link switch---->computer2. Either configure static or, if both machines are running Windows, wait for them to self-assign IP addresses. Then try to ping computer2 from computer1. If it doesn't work, then the switch is bad.
