Please help. My Netgear R6400 stopped responding

    I can't figure out how to configure the Netgear without an internet connection, and the only connection I can get is on the AT&T.

     

    Here's what I do:

     

    • Turn off R6400 from unplug from network
    • Unplug PC from network
    • Turn off PC
    • Plug R6400 into PC.
    • Turn on R6400 
    • Aim browser at routerlogin.net or 192.168.1.1
    • Put R6400 into AP mode.
    • Turn off R6400

    Now you can reassemble your network with the PC connected to the modem/router.

     

    When you plug the R6400 into the router, you will have to track down the IP address that the router has allocated to it. Look for a page with a list of attached devices.

     

    You could even try doing that now. Find that page in your BGW320. Look for something that could be the  R6400 and aim a browser at it.

     

    It took me years to get the Netgear configured the way I wanted, especially since I'm no expert on that.

     

    Only you know how you configured your network and why it took so long, but if you have changed the modem/gateway between you and the Internet, many things will be different. The easiest things to change are the wifi SSID and password. Just read the instructions.

     

    If you want to use the R6400 as your router – possibly not a good idea with something as old as something from 2015 – then you need to work out how to put your BGW320 into "bridge" (modem only) mode.

     

    Or just dump the R6400 and use the new BGW320 to run your network.

You don't need to mess with "subnets" to use the R6400 in AP mode.

That is for a router that is already on the network. It can be easier to disconnect the R6400 from the network and connect it to a PC that is also connected to  nothing else.

 

Reset the R6400 then connect it to the PC and go through those instructions.

 

Then you can just connect the R6400 to the main router.

 

After that, remember to restart the network.

 

Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:

  • Turn off and unplug modem.
  • Turn off router and computers.
  • Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
  • Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
  • Turn on computers and rest of network.

 

Did I brick it?

 

Unlikely if all the LEDs behave as expected.
