Since I was not able to get it working, I went back to the shop, which concluded that the device was broken. So I bought another one.

"tried to upgrade the firmware with tftp2" omits many details of a
multi-step procedure. Unless you're changing your computer's IP address
between "using 192.168.1.1" and "or 192.168.0.1", then you can expect
some failures. According to the R4500 User Manual, "192.168.1.1" is its

One advantage of the command-line TFTP programs is that you're more
likely to get a useful error message from them. But, again, if the
router does not respond to "ping", then there's little hope for TFTP.
