R6220 Cannot access admin functions

You refer to the genie. This could be one of several things, the browser interface, a Windows or Mac program for a PC, or a mobile Android/iThing app. Netgear labels them all as genies. Which are you using?
What firmware version do you have on the device?
A number is more useful than "the latest". (It may not be by the time people read this.) There can also be newer versions, or "hot fixes", that do not show up if you check for new firmware in the browser interface.
It might also help if you told people what the modem is in front of this router, if there is one. The model number could be useful. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back?
The reason for asking is that a lot of people turn up here trying to put a router behind a modem that is also a router. That can complicate troubleshooting.
it has taken me so long to respond. Things have gotten a little crazy around here and the router issue took a back seat for a while.

michaelkenwardNetGeanie comes back and says my password is incorrect, no matter what password I put in. After about 5 tries or so, it locks up.

I have tried with both a wired connection from my Mac Pro desktop and my ipad, using the Nighthawk app. I was able to download the NetGeanie app for iOS, but as soon as I ran it, it told me to downloadthe Nighthawk app for accessing thr router via my iPad. It has never allowed me to access the router. However, I have never had an issue like this before.

We wanted a cable modem with battery backup power when the power goes out at home so we can use our landline phones to report the power outtage or make other emergency calls. Yes, I believe it does have 4 LAN ports on the back. We use one to plug the NetGear router into. The modem is a Technicolor TC8717T.

This probably explains your experience. You are running with two routers.
Two routers on your network can cause headaches. For example, you can end up with local address problems. Among other things, the other router can misdirect addresses that the Netgear router usually handles, such as routerlogin.net or the usual IP address for a router, 192.168.1.1.
The router will also have trouble when you try to get into the browser's graphical user interface (GUI).

It may be possible to put the modem/router into modem only (bridge) mode and then to use the second device as the router.The manual for your modem/router may explain how to do this, or there is aways Google.

Sometimes it is easier to put the second router, the R6220, into AP mode. (See the manual.) But that has its own drawbacks:

Since we got it. I will disconnect the NetGear and see what happens. Else, it seems the only thing that may solve this issue is to get a different cable modem/router and get a smart phone for times when there is no power. Really missing the old days ... before the dark times ... before the Empire.
