R6230
I changed the password for my router. At least I think I did. Anyway when I try to connect my mother's laptop to my wifi, it will not accept the new password. It will accept the old one, but only to...
OK just realized that I haven't given enough info for any realistic help. SO here goes.
It is an R6230 Netgear router that I have used for several years. I also have 2 extenders connected to it. A Netgear extender and an TP-link extender. about a week ago, we suddenly can't get wifi in the extension of our house. the laptop says it is connected - but not to the internet. After some trial and error I was pretty sure it was the extenders. Since everything else works and the aforementioned laptop works when it is next to the router. SOOO I called tech support for the TP-Link and they determined that I had 17 devices currently open on the router???? we have 7 in our home. So he recommended that I change the password and check my security. I did. When I changed the router - I ended up doing a factory reset and then reset the password. So everything in the main part of the house is still working, BUT the extension is still without wifi. I re-initialized the extenders and tried again to login. I get the error message that it can't connect to the internet. When I check the network settings, it shows that I am connected, but not to the internet. I tried to manually connect to the router but it won't accept the new password. It will only accept the old password and then I get the same error messages. Hope this is enough info for someone to go...hey you just need to...whatever!
It shouldn't make much difference to your problem, but the R6230 is an aged (2017) and not very powerful router.
You don't say what these extenders are and how they connect to the router. Wired or wireless.
We also don't know what modem/gateway/ONT connects you to the internet.
As you have reset the R6230, you may have to take the extenders through their setup procedures from scratch. Is that what you mean by "re-initialized"?

Is that the WiFi password or the router's management password?
I know it doesn't solve your immediate problem, but with a router of that age and performance, it might be time to consider moving up to a Mesh system with a souter and dedicated satellites. Netgear make the Orbi and MK ranges, but there are plenty of alternatives out there.
Technology has moved on quite a bit since 2017. You may even have faster Internet that would benefit from better kit.
Just another user with time on their hands.
