R6250 Router dropping Internet access since V1.0.4.26_10.1.23 firmware update

I have just (re?)discovered that having had no cause to contact Netgear for support within the first 90 days of the product - before their Firmware Update messed the product up - I apparently have no support from them unless there is a hardware fault.
Especially considering the fact that their firmware caused the problem, I am somewhat less than impressed. I've used and recommened NetGear for more years than I can remember, but I think it's about time I broadened my horizons. I can't return it as havign a hardware fault since the fault is in the firmware, and I can't even help Netgear identify and fix a problem with their firmware because they are not listening!
Annoying.

- HelpusJul 08, 2018InitiateIs there a definitive answer to this recurring problem? I have had to reboot mine twice within the last 30 minutes.

Hi Helpus,
Welcome to the community!
1. What troubleshooting steps have you done?
2. Please make sure that a factory reset is done after the firmware update.
Regards,
Dexter

- HelpusJul 09, 2018InitiateI currently have only been rebooting. Having read many people on this thread as well as others, I saw where a factory reset did not fix the issue, so why would I want to go through the hassle of having to re configure everything for something that doesn’t work?
Is there a list of DNS servers for me to choose from? This seems to be what I am reading as the main thing that is working for most people. Currently I am set to the Open DNS servers for parental control.
Can we expect Netgear to send an email with resolutions like they sent the email that told us to update for security reasons?
Thank you all for helping.

Hi Helpus,
I am not aware of a definitive fix at present, though I am working with Netgear towards diagnosing the issue. For me, doing a factory reset and then reconfiguring all the settings did not fix the issue.
So far I have found that setting the DNS servers to either your ISPs DNS servers seems to cure the stability issue at the expense of losing the parental controls.
I went away on holiday for a week and when I came back I forgot that I had done that deliberately and noticed that "Parental Controls" was not enabled in the NetGear Genie, so I re-enabled it. Voila, within half an hour I lost Internet connectivity (technically I still had Internet Connectivity, but DNS searches no longer worked and both Windows 10 and Android reported a drop in Internet Connection).
Netgear tech support had be change the DNS servers to some Google ones to test again - and with those in place the connection has been stable for days (although obviously Parental Controls don't work). It's interesting - to me - that the problem SEEMS to be related to the OpenDNS servers used by Netgear's Parental Controls. Sadly, testing is limited to the amount of time I can spare to test as, alas, I have a lot of other things to do as well :(

I have the same nightmare since they sent email scaring me of security issues. I was fooled to update.
Since then I called them, they want money for their service. Netgear should know that it will loose many customers with their buggy firmware and outrageous service charges.
- ShayAKSep 04, 2018AspirantI have the same issue of dropping internet when parental control is enabled. The router firmware is 1.0.4.26.
Any resolution to this?- Who3DSep 06, 2018Star
Hi. I did indeed return the R8000 for full refund, and have returned the R6250 to a previous set of firmware. With previous firmware I can use the parental controls AND have a USB drive attached to the router and actually work. That's the best workaround I have for now. I have no word on a new firmware release that will actually address the issue and fix whatever security problem exists with the older firmware.
My issue specifically has been "kicked upstairs" for a higher tier of support to deal with. They have yet to cotnact me. I am, to be honest, somewhat disappointed in the speed of resolution. Perhaps they are comparing the current and previous firmware releases to see if they can find the source of the problem.
Cheers,
Cliff

Oh yes - the firmware I reverted my R6250 to is V1.0.4.20_10.1.20. This appears to work, without having to perform frequent restarts - but of course there is the nagging worry that there is a firmware update that is supposed to address some security concern or other. Worrying.
It's always possible that there is some other factor at work here that is allowing the R6250 to work now - perhaps I don't have as many clients bound to specific IP addresses this time around, or maybe the Parental Controls are different. Certainly I have been increasingly reluctant to redo the same work over and over again since V1.0.4.26_10.1.23 was released - though that feels like I am desperately clutching at straws to defend Netgear. It also feels less like the router is working for me and more like I work for the router :(
Sincerely,
Cliff
