OK, it looks like I'm between a rock and a hard spot whichever way I go:

I can either go back to older firmware to regain web access to the router; but if I do, I will have to risk security vulnerabilities.
Sorry Netgear, either release a fix soon or I find a new brand of router.

Many of those "security vulnerabilities" are theoretical. They come out of professional security labs that earn a living selling software and services or from military labs where they fight of naughty enemies.
Most of the vulnerabilities that turn up rarely make it into the real world of consumer grade routers. If all the people who never update their firmware became infected, the planet would be would be awash with compromised devices. People turn up here with firmware that can be many years out of date. Security is rarely the problem.
You won't see many, if any, reports here from people who have who get infected. That is more likely to happen when someone sends them a phishing email and they respond unwisely. Then there are the people who call a fake support site and invite crooks to invade their hardware. We see more of them that security woes due to firmware.
I'm not playing down the need to keep firmware up to date, I always do, but it helps to balance the risks of running old firmware with the hassle of putting up with bugs. It is your call, but decisions are best made knowing the background.
