thank you. I downloaded and also accessed netgear settings at which time discivered there was an update available which I downloaded. interestingly that may have resolved the issue as the signal is now consistently strong. thanks for your help and I now know what to look for in the future.

First of all distance between router and modem has no effect on WiFi radio signal. Mine are sitting side by side. Do you use WiFi signal surveillance utility like inSSIDer of Acrylic? If not, down load one and run it to see yourWiFi signal environment. Pick the best channel and try it.
