What router do you have?
If you have a dual band router and it doesn't have smart connect, then its usually the phone/tablet/device that you choose which to connect to.
But again, easier to know with model numbers.
You can also go to netgear.com/support/ and type in a model number. it takes you to manuals, guides, etc
