For anyone interested I ended up installing xwrt-vortex (http://xvtx.ru/xwrt/index.htm) which allowed me to set a local ipv6 DNS host and take full advantage of ipv6 DNS filtering for pi-hole (https://pi-hole.net)

Thanks Microchip8 - do you have an alternative firmware you'd recommend? I've used dd-wrt before on Linksys routers, but not sure what plays best with netgear

Good. Both XWRT and Tomato are excellent firmwares for the R7000. I used both and stuck with Tomato as it offers some stuff XWRT doesn't yet. Also I had a battery drain problem on XWRT which went away when on Tomato

Yes. It appears only Samsung phones were affected - I have a Galaxy J5. No idea why and no idea if that has been fixed already. I haven't used XWRT in about half an year or more
