If you are with a cable ISP, you may try performing MAC spoofing and see if it works. You may refer to the link below for the instructions:

Yes that's possible but it wouldn't explain why it didn't work without any MAC spoofing. Oh well, I have no explanation. A change in Layer 2 addressing should not affect Layer 3 in this instance.
