That's right.
The chk file is the new firmware. You have to load that on to your router.
How do I manually upgrade firmware to my NETGEAR router? | Answer | NETGEAR Support
As the release notes say, the manual will also tell you how to do it.
Visit the support pages:
Support | NETGEAR
Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.
Check the section in the manual:
Update the router and satellite firmware

Hey, Guru?
When I log in to to my router, I am given the option of automatic or manual update. Automatic says there is no new firmware, but according to what it says is the current firmware version (4.6.11.1) and what the Netgear website says is available, (4.6.14.3) there clearly IS a new firmware update. However when I go to do the manual update I get a warning:
"Uploading a firmware manually may cause incompatibility issues among Orbi devices. NETGEAR strongly suggests using Online Update to update your firmware. Do you still want to proceed? "
This makes me nervous.
Is it safe to proceed?
