I’m having a hard time trying to figure out what’s happening when I display a list of attached devices on my network. Most disturbing is a list of “garbage” name devices. These appear only when ...

Thanks for the wake up call! Our internet needs are modest, and I haven't had any problems other than this recent display of device names, so I hadn't realized so much has changed. Reading up on WiFi 6/7, DOCSIS 3.1/4.0, WPA3, etc. now. Thanks again!

Maybe, but if you are paying for anything near 100 Mbps for your Internet speed, you may be amazed at the improvement.
Even with slower Internet the laptop and phone would probably benefit from 5 GHz wifi.

DOCSIS is a modem thing.
You may not need to change anything on that front. The technology there changes less often and less dramatically.
The only problem could be if it has a LAN connection to the router that is also slow.
What modem do you have?

The modem is a Cisco DPC3010, also circa 2009.

That modem is also limited to 100 Mbps Ethernet.
No problem if you have slow Internet. But it will be a bottleneck if you ever upgrade to anything faster than 100 Mbps.

Michael, microchip,
Thank you for all your help! I wasn't paying attention to changes in wifi and routers.. My wife wants to watch shows on Netflix, but was getting some buffering. Cox has an offer where we can use their modem/router combo free for two years, so I'll go with that and plan to buy when that deal expires. Thanks again!
