Why are the white lights flashing?

I have been having issues losing connection to the internet and the white lights on the router have always flashed, seems sometimes more then other times. What does this mean? From day one they have flashed and everything worked fine, now I am having issues and they still flash. Very frustrating, I have only had this router for 13 months, shouldn't things last longer then a year???&nbsp;
