Thanks for the suggestion Doraemon, but we've decided to simply replace the router. It's been in use for almost, if not 4 years and it's time to get something with AC wireless now that the standard has matured considerably.
I was really hoping someone had experienced this or knew of general reasons why this could happen, and while there were suggestions which saw improvements they are not in any way feasible to our network configuration.
