One can find newer used or referb'd routers online for fairly inexpensive. Got a few off Amazon.
Good thinking. Fix your budget and look around.
Start with deciding what you want to do with this router, and then find something that fills the bill and fits your budget.
If you want to stick with Netgear, try plugging your needs into the filters on the product pages:
WiFi Routers | Wireless Routers | NETGEAR
and
NETGEAR'S Mesh WiFi Network Routers + Systems
Then check back here for reports on the things you are considering, but remember that people turn up in this community with problems, not compliments. So look at reviews on Amazon, for example.

Either one. The security information is a notification of a fix in security so if that version is most current then you can use this version as well.
The Security advisory page is dated: Last Updated:12/22/2020
The standard FW download page for last official release is dated: Last Updated:08/17/2018
I would presume the most recent dated version would be recommended.

The whole point of the question from joesouza, as they explained in their first message, is that they cannot find the version mentioned in the security update.
I would presume the most re[c]ent dated version would be recommended.
Yes, but where does joesouza find it?
One possibility that I didn't throw in to my response was that Netgear is not only bad at maintaining documentation, it has also been known to pull firmware updates from the support pages without any warning. It does this when a new release turns out to cause problems.

Time for something anew then.

If that means that joesouza should move on to new router, I have to agree.
Worrying about security is a bit odd when you are using something as old as the wnr1000.
Either live with it, or move on.
