One can find newer used or referb'd routers online for fairly inexpensive. Got a few off Amazon.
Good thinking. Fix your budget and look around.
Start with deciding what you want to do with this router, and then find something that fills the bill and fits your budget.
If you want to stick with Netgear, try plugging your needs into the filters on the product pages:
WiFi Routers | Wireless Routers | NETGEAR
and
NETGEAR'S Mesh WiFi Network Routers + Systems
Then check back here for reports on the things you are considering, but remember that people turn up in this community with problems, not compliments. So look at reviews on Amazon, for example.

Any ideas which is the correct firmware that should be used for the wnr1000v4?
I would place more faith in the support pages for that device than I would in an old security advisory. Netgear is notoriously bad at keeping documentation up to date.
There hasn't been new firmware for that device since 2018. We are talking about a router based on something that first appeared in 2009, so it won't be high on the priority list for Netgear's firmware team.
This seven-year old router is also on the "EOL" list:
NETGEAR End of Service | NETGEAR
Given that it has minimal specifications – slow (100 Mbps LAN and no 5 GHz wifi – anyone worrying about security might want to acquire something designed for the 2020s.
