I don't know what browser you tried upgrading your router with, but I suggest you using Microsoft Edge in attempting to apply that firmware upgrade. I think there's bugs with other browsers when trying to upgrade from a browser.

Go to the netgear.com website under support and then type the model number of your router and see if there's a more up to date firmware. You can apply it manually also, just download the latest firmware and apply it on the GUI on the router page.
