I don't know what browser you tried upgrading your router with, but I suggest you using Microsoft Edge in attempting to apply that firmware upgrade. I think there's bugs with other browsers when trying to upgrade from a browser.

I had also downloaded the upgrade file and tried the Upload method. As before, the "Please wait..." message displays and never changes, no matter how long I wait.
Your subject says " WNR2000 V4 modem router". It isn't a modem.router. Just a router.
So what modem/gateway sits between the router and the Internet?
Is the WNR2000V4 in router or AP mode?
You do realise that the "new" firmware for this device is five years old?
According to Netgear's manual for this device, not always the most reliable source of information, the LAN and WAN support only 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX. That makes it slower than many newer internet services and most modern network hardware. This may not matter to you, but be warned that it will hobble you if you ever sign up for faster Internet. It also slows down whatever is going on in your local network. Newer devices support 1000BASE-TX.
Nothing wrong with it being old, just don't expect too much.

D--n! Using MS Edge did it. I've been using Firefox.
Thank you; I had not seen any other information that said some browsers were buggy with respect to the router.
Cheers,
Richard

Firefox causes increasing grief here. It keeps breaking things. I often find myself in Edge.
