My router is 10 years old.  On my 2019 HP laptop, I keep getting warnings that "This wi-fi network uses an older security standard that's being phased out.  We recommend connecting to a different network."  Do I buy a new router?  Do I just get updated downloads from Netgear?  Do I receive a new CD to connect to different network?  I'm not technically advanced, and somewhat confused at what I need to do.

  • Make sure your router is fully updated to the latest firmware and see if you still get the message.  You should also check what security standard your router is set to use.  You probably just need to select one of the more current standards for your network.

Below is the information on the security standards that router supports.  Are your using WEP?  If so you definitely need to change it.  Personally, I use the WPA2-PSK [AES] standard.

The available wireless security depends on the wireless mode selected for the router.  When the wireless mode is set at Up to 54 Mbps mode, WEP, WPA-PSK [TKIP] and WPA2-PSK [AES] are supported.  When the wireless mode is set at Up to 145Mbps or 300Mbps, users can still setup the WEP, WPA-PSK, or WPA2-PSK, but we recommend to set the wireless security mode as WPA2-PSK[AES] mode to achieve the most robust and high performance.

I am very confused at all the acronyms written.  I don't know how to make sure router is fully updated to the latest "firmware".  My security "type" is WPA-Personal.  Network band 2.4 Ghz. Link speed 34/36 (Mbps).  Protocol 802.119.  One channel.  If I open "other networks", I can easily connect, but then I won't have that particular password.  How does that work?  When you asked if I am using WEB, what is WEB defined?  Sorry for my ignorance.

That should have been WEP not WEB.  Sorry.  Try changing your standard from WPA Personal to WPA2-PSK [AES]  if you have that option.

        Hope this helps.  Good Luck.
