WNR2000v5 can't connect after factory reset.
I did a factory reset of my router since I needed to change some settings but couldn't remember my password. After the reset I could log in to the genie (routerlogin.net) just fine, but every time I t...

I can't directly connect my desktop to the cable. I only get a few centimeters of cable which enters my room near the ceiling, about 3.5m high. I need a ladder to reset the router. So connecting my pc with an ethernet cable is only possible through the router.
After setting up an access point, I used Ipconfig/all in windows CMD and tried both the Ipv4 address that I got and to connect directly through routerlogin.net, but neither one worked.
I then tried to manually change IP and preferred DNS on my desktop, which got me to the next troubleshooting errors "the default gateway is not available" and "the connection between your access point and the internet is broken". Coincidentally, the Internet LED on the router has gone from green to amber, suggesting that there somehow is a new problem with connecting to the internet.
I have contacted my ISP and they said that they are trying to figure it out from their end, but they tend to be a bit slow, so I'd prefer to be able to fix this myself, if possible.

Unfortunately, it isn't easy work out how to get on to atypical networks. Netgear's routers are designed to connect to modems. Local networks like those on colleges can work in many different ways, depending on who manages them.
The most likely scenario is that the Internet feeds into a central routers and that then goes out into a switch that sends the connection out to a load of sockets for individual use.

How do you connect the router to this socket on the wall? Can't you just remove the cable that goes into the router and plug it into the PC?
If there is a router at the other end of the cable, it will see your PC and establish a connection without having your WNR2000v5 in the middle. That won't give you WiFi, but it will confirm how the network operates.
- WazxApr 05, 2023AspirantMy ISP just replied. Apparently, they configured the routers to be unusable after a factory reset, citing security concerns. They are going to send me a new router which should fix it, hopefully it will arrive soon.
Regardless, thank you for helping me. - michaelkenwardApr 05, 2023Guru - Experienced User

The good news is that they should provide you with something newer than your decade old WNR2000v5.
According to Netgear's manual for this device, not always the most reliable source of information, the LAN and WAN ports support only 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX. That makes it slower than many newer internet services and most modern network hardware.
Most newer routers are 1000BASE-TX. If the Internet connection is up to it you might get better speeds.
Good luck.
