Ancient = 2014 based on a 2009 original.
LAN/WAN connection at 100 Mbps (1000 Mbps has been the standard since around 2015) and no 5 GHz wifi (also standard for a decade ir so).

Indeed.

Okay, just wondering if Negear employees lurk here and know where the software updates are for a product that plainly is labeled "WNR2000v5 R2" yet is MIA from the support website, even though an "R1" has newer firmware for downloading.
I didn't post the question to be lectured on the age of the equipment. I understand it is no longer sold or supported, thus resorting to helpful suggestions by community members. The fact of the matter is I have a specific use-case for no more than 1Mbps (hardly!) 802.11b using WEP in an obscure location, attached as an AP to a real home network. Old stuff is not necessarily bad stuff. In fact, newer routers won't do the job because then I'd have to lower the security of the entire house. An old router is just fine, thank you very much! I'm helping save the planet, reusing perfectly functional equipment. And yes, I know WEP is insecure and I know 1Mbps is slow, but that's not your concern is it?

When Netgear provides devices to ISPs it washes its hands of the support process.
There is a high probability that you didn't buy your router from Netgear. If you got it from an ISP, it is then down to the ISP to provide updates.
Have you gone back to your ISP for help?
None of the Netgear employees who lurk around here can help much.

No one is lecturing you. They are providing information so that you can decide what do do next.
If your concern is about security, a lot has happened in the 15 years since that device first came out.
No firmware update on a decade old device will get you up to modern standards. For example, changes in wifi security standards need new hardware, not firmware tweaks.
The most helpful suggestion is that you should consider an upgrade to current standards.
