Is this correct:
1) Install firmware (what's the recommended method, download the file and upload via wifi?)
2) Factory reset by holding in the botton on the router, correct?
3) What is the "Manual install" method?

I wouldn't upload via wifi. when we see issues with corrupt firmware it tends to be by those who did it over wifi or using the app.

Then can you please briefly explain the process you suggest?

just follow the manual firmware upgrade process but use the older firmware. I just recommend doing it over and ethernet connection and not via wifi.

I'll have to bring my laptop home over the weekend to upgrade over LAN but I did update over WIFI today and had the issue. It does say "connected without internet" on my phone.

Manuals are always a good place to start.
Visit the support pages:
Support | NETGEAR
Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.
That page will also have any software, firmware and drivers for your device, if they exist.
Look for the model number on the label on the device.
Check the section in the manual on updating the firmware.
You may have done that already. I can't tell from your message.
I mention it because Netgear gave up on supplying paper manuals and CD versions some years ago and people sometimes miss the downloads. So you might find it helpful to stash away a copy of the manual.- aeroflyer711Sep 03, 2021AspirantThe manual also only mentions updates via WiFi and the person helping me has mentioned not doing wifi which is why I wanted to clarify the exact process they were proposing to make sure I wasn't doing things different than they suggested. Also, I can reset the router by just pushing and releasing the reset button or I've seen the hold the button, unplug, hold the button, ... Option (I forget the exact sequence of the top of my head).
