7800 with 7000 as a wireless repeater?

The solution ended up being to throw the 7000 in the bin and just use the 7800. Originally the 7000 was the primary AP, we swapped it out with the 7800 and the coverage was such that an extender wasn't needed (thankfully). None of the options for connecting these was appealing given the lack of in-house cabling and the associated expense. In the end, he's happy and has acceptable coverage so we'll put that one in the lessons learned box.

A second option is the Netgear EX8000 Wi-Fi Range Extender. The EX8000 can set up a 4 stream, 5 GHz backhaul to the R7800. The EX8000 has three radios (2 x 5 GHz and 1 x 2.4 GHz). There is a good review of the EX8000 connected to a R7800 on SmallNetBuilder.com.
A third option if there is cable TV coax in the house is to use a pair of MoCA 2.0-Bonded devices like the ActionTec ECB6200 to connect the R7800 to the R7000. I use a pair of these to extend Ethernet from the first to the second floor of my house, and I get 920 Mbps in one direction.
