       Perhaps for the reason explained in the documentation.  Visit
    http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look for
    Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Look for "LED and button
    descriptions".

          The LED color indicates the speed: white for Gigabit Ethernet
          connections and amber for 100 Mbps or 10 Mbps Ethernet
          connections.
