link speed isn't the same as actual throughput speed. And 2.4ghz is slow.
so what actual speed do you get out of it?

Ah ok, thank you for clarifying that. I haven't really been keeping up with the current technology for the past 4 or 5 years.
My modem is a Netgear CMD31T and I tested my internet speed my result was 137.5Mbps
My router is a Netgear WNR3500Lv2. I'll keep posting my router that way there isn't so much back tracking to see what router I have.

so the router is getting the full 137mbps hardwired in?
And what speeds do you get over wireless? Just trying to see if you're speeds are actually slow or an expectation of that router

Cripes. That's seriously old. 2013.
According to the specifications, it is DOCSIS 3.0 standard. Newer devices are 3.1, but there's no point in having that unless your ISP demands, and supports, it.
At least it has a Gigabit Ethernet port. Not all devices of that generation are that fast.
Still, it does rule out the dreaded "double NAT" affliction. Plain modem. No router.
Sadly, the WNR3500Lv2 is also old. 2011. No 5 GHz wifi. (Again, though, it does have Gigabit Ethernet.) But you should get better speeds than you see.
If your trouble started after you applied the latest firmware, you could always install on older version.

I figured if it was time to get a new modem and router. But my internet was fine until I updated my router to the current firmware. Then my wifi went to complete crap.
I think if I install the older firmware I should be okay.

No guarantees there! But nothing lost either.
