Can I throttle my own speed with this NETGEAR router?

I have a Nighthawk X6 R8000 router. It is being used with a 400Mb connection through Comcast/Xfinity. With this speed,  I am currently working remotely from home & all is working good.

I am looking to possibly take an extended vacation (not sure where yet) and get a place through AirBnB or VRBO. Would also like to be able to continue working remotely. Of course, it depends on the internet speed at this new vacation property.

In my experience, most vacation rental properties don't have anywhere near the speed I am able to get at home. Therefore, is it possible through this R8000 router to throttle my home speed to just my work laptop (a Macbook Pro)? I want to see if I am able to still function at a lower internet speed and simulate it from home before getting somewhere and realize it doesn't work.

If so, how?

  • There's no speed throttling per device in the firmware. The closes you can get is mess with the QoS settings.

If you usually connect with wired devices, then connecting over wifi at 2.4 GHz will give some idea of what happens with a slower connection.

You might be surprised. Most places minimum cable/fibre speed is now that 100mbps + speeds.

That should be more than enough from work from home
