So RouterLogin.net did not work, it wouldn't display the webpage. But 192.168.1.1 worked
If anyone was having my problem, once you log in to 192.168.1.1 (default creds are admin/password) you need to go to the advanced tab, then Administration, and then Router Upgrade. It will then give you an option to upload the firmware update file from your PC.
However, this didn't do anything for my real problem, as the router is still "connected without Internet" even after successful upgrade to the latest firmware.

Further update: I checked the router status in the Advanced--> administration menu. The ip showed 0.0.0.0 which meant the router couldn't get an IP. so I hard rebooted the modem and router together, and after reboot an IP was assigned and everything works now!

Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:- Turn off and unplug modem.
- Turn off router and computers.
- Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
- Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
- Turn on computers and rest of network.
