CM-1200 nighthawk modem 4 ethernet port

Purchased said item a while back, Spectrum had a blast trying to get it the right speed - but that was on their end not pushing the speed to the modem, and not the modems fault.

 

I have purchased this to get rid of an old modem / 5 ethernet port switch  - thinking this would be "IT" as a replacement.

I was surprised with the lack of paperwork it came with and the lack of info leading me to a solution in the "support" section.

 

So, what is the problem.....  well simple, I refuse to use a router, I am paying for additional IP addresses which were (before Spectrum screwed with old modem -> new modem set up) were thrown at each of my computers through a simple switch.

Now, they managed to get my speed back, but unable to get the 4 PCs connected.  On the back of this MODEM, there are 4

ports for ethernet cable....  those are (I think  built in switch)  -  correct me if I am wrong....   tried hooking up all 4 ports to 4 different PCs, but only the initial gets an IP, and able to connect up to the net....  the others sit there looking stupid.

 

Now, I did try to hook my old switch up to port 1 ethernet on the MODEM, and then hook up all the PCs to that switch like (old times) but can't connect either....   

 

QUESTION - ethernet ports on MODEM - can be used individually as long as you are getting IPs from ISP

                    - what are those ethernet ports for if not for multimple IP allowances?

                    - port one if I hook switch up and still nothing ---  LOST IPs from ISP - or they are not giving it up to me?

                    - I always got AUTOmatic IP, and did not have to hammer chissel it into a manually set up rigid config

                      do I really need to go this route and have ISP tell me those 4 IP numbers they are assigning me?

                      

 

Thank you for any help in this matter....  I got internet on one PC.... struggling to get it on the others without the use of 

router....  ( dont want to give up additional IP to use one and hide behind just one via router )

       Thanks for that detailed description.  Simple modem, not
    modem+router?

       Does your ISP know that?  Do the people at your ISP who provisioned
    your new-modem service know that?

       Typical ISP service provides no more.

       I wouldn't expect that to help.  (But see Note 1, below.)

       One radical path to enlightenment:

       Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
    for Documentation.  Get the User Manual (at least).  Read.  Look for
    "LAN ports".

     

       As I read it, the CM1200 User Manual discusses only port aggregation,
    not a block of IP addresses, so it's not obvious that it can do what you
    want, but that could be only a documentation shortage, not an actual
    functional problem.  I'd expect a Web/forum search for your model to
    find many more users who do _not_ have an IP address block trying to do
    what you're doing, but with no hope of success.

     

       Having no actual experience, I know nothing, but I'd guess that your
    argument is with your ISP.  If you can connect one client device to any
    of the LAN ports on the CM1200, then I'd blame the ISP for the failure
    of more than one client device to get an IP address.

       Presumably, if static address assignments would work, then they could
    mane dynamic ones work, too.  Again, it's an ISP problem.

       Why?  There's much to be said in favor of hiding a typical desktop
    system behind a NAT router, rather than exposing it directly to the
    Internet.

     


       Note 1. If your IP address block gives you four usable addresses,
    then I'd expect it to give you five.  Adding a network switch would let
    you use the fifth one.

      Yup, they know about it.... been paying for it for years,....  they jacked it up when I switched modems.....  upgrading an old netgear modem for this one.  Netgear techs said that those ports are supposed to be giga ports, and if ISP does push IP out it "should" work....

      Aggregation?   You mean agrivation!!!!  hahahahahaha   J/K

       

      It is nice to hide behind a solid firewall of a router I agree.... but I do need those additional IP  or I would have given up paying for it for 

      years....   If only port 1 works, I can use it to connect my switch and then it will split it to the 4 different IP....

       

      BTW  I am on phone with ISP - they said I got only MODEM single IP....   I said "since WHEN?"

           There are differences between "only port 1 works" and "only 1 port
        works", or "only 1 port at a time works", hence:

           Did you try that?  Care to share your findings?  Your initial problem
        description was unclear (to me) on that point.

           People make all kinds of assertions here without evidence or
        explanation.  You might be right, but who could tell?

           A large ISP seldom contains only one "them", and they don't always
        agree.
