connect my Buffalo hard drive to my netgear R6900 router

Question

I have a buffalo HD-LCU3 external hard drive connected to my netgear R6900 router and i can transfer documents, pictures, etc. but i cannot set up auto backups? the hard drive is not a NAS, so can i still do the setup that i'm trying to do
