d7000 guest network defaulting to 5g

im new so please dont bite.
ive a d7000 and have had issues where i connect to my 2.4 ssid and end up (showing at least) on the 5GHZ. RESOLVED by updating firmware to V1.0.1.66_1.0.1

Perhaps you mean that the ring software you are using on the (unknown to us) device is trying to latch on to 5GHz. If so, that is down to whatever device you are using, not the router.
If your wifi clients are getting confused, and you can't work out how to get them to play ball, then you could disable (not hide) all 5GHz SSIDs.

Again, as I said earlier that is down to the wifi clients. Not the router.
Is there a ring support forum you can consult? It n might cut to the chase more quickly than running around worrying about a blameless router.

is it simply that there is a(nother) leak somewhere that means we cant choose which of the two guest network we connect to? even if one is "disabled"
also whats up with having to turn on broadcast on both?

By the way, you have posted your message in the section of this community given over to

Your device is a DSL Modem/Router. You might get better replies, and find other answers, over in the appropriate section:

As to your question, what makes you think that the modem router is involved? It is up to wifi clients to decide which wifi source to connect to. Given that 5 GHz is faster than 2.4 GHz, any self respecting wifi client will try to connect to that.
Oh, and "not visible" does not mean "not active".

Sorry if ive posted in the wrong place, im new to this.. if i can move it please let me know and ill do so and thanks for replying.
As i said the 5G guest network its not actually active (no tick in enable guest network). The devices (ring doorbell) ask for a connection / SSID to use when setting them up, they need to be on 2.4 according to ring so Im selecting the guest 2.4 one, its shows in the ring app as it is using the 2.4 one - but the router access control screen shows the device and mac address connected to the G5 SSID.
We still have to wait for your pictures to show up, but this bit caught my eye.

If a 2.4 GHz device wants to connect, it will not see any 5 GHz wifi. What your 5 GHz devices do doesn't matter.
You won't want your ring on any guest network.
I have no idea what software you are using to connect your ring devices, but I would spend some time investigating that rather than your modem/router. It just puts out wifi. It is then up to other stuff to connect to it.
Im using the ring software to connect, Ring is a company owned by Amazon and the doorbells are quite well known here in the UK
During the install procedure the ring software only shows me the 2.4ghz networks. Im selecting the 2.4ghz network and ring is stating that its connecting to them.
