For clarification, please note that V1.0.4.26 does not have the issue of bricking the router. Therefore, factory reset and configuration will work if you have only upgraded to V1.0.4.26. There is no coming back from bricking the router with V1.0.4.28. It will not allow factory reset or downgrade to be applied. You will need to ask for an RMA. Go to https://www.netgear.com/support/contact.aspx and click on "Replace my defective product."

FYI, I have never backed up my router's configuration, nor trusted the restore process. I have never upgraded my router's firmware without restoring factory defaults beforehand.
I type up all the configuration changes I make to the router into a text file so I can re-enter them after every firmware upgrade.
I have done this for years with every router I have ever owned.
