The thing is I did the upgrade via the admin panel via the browser. So your saying the computer your using that’s connected to the router handles the firmware update and not the router itself?
I’d have thought after it was downloaded to the router and you click go it’s all handled by the router and not the other way around?

No.
If you initiate the update through the router or with an app, the router goes to the Netgear server and gets the new firmware file, stores that in memory ands then writes the firmware into memory.
If you update manually, using a file you retrieved from the support section, you have a direct connection from your desktop and can write your new file into the router's memory.
You can see that the first automated option can fail if there is an interruption in the original process of retrieving the firmware.
