Firmware Update
I cannot update the firmware. I have tried everything without success. I am a senior systems analyst, if that will save time as far as getting help goes. Nighthawk takes me in an endless loop. I am ha...
- Nov 14, 2021Netgear deserves my criticism in this particular area just as the ISP does in other areas and I'll tell you why and then I am done with this conversation. I admit that I am a little sensitive for a couple of reasons. 1. Cardiomyopathy isn't fun. I have limited time left on this Earth and don't appreciate it when a vendor like Netgear wastes some of that time.
2. Part of my job involves providing maintenance and support to my end users. As a result I'm overly sensitive to poor communication and misinformation.
I never said that I expected something to be plastered on the box. Don't put words in my mouth. It's not unreasonable for me to expect clear communication in an important area like this.
Netgear took me on a wild goose chase with this firmware issue leading me to believe that it could be updated and taking me around and around in circles. I don't appreciate it. I am smart enough to take extra steps to get the answers I need which is why I'm here in the first place on this forum.
The Nighthawk app led me down a misleading path and I don't appreciate it. I'm not asking for information to be plastered on the box and all of it given to me up front but I do expect a company to provide clear communication and correct information.
The issue has been resolved anyway. The ISP had to spend a significant amount of time replacing some wiring out back and also gave me a substantial credit on my account due to the issues I've been having. They gave me enough credit to buy another piece of equipment and throw this Netgear piece of garbage in the recycling bin. Like I said I don't have very much time left as it is and I don't need to waste time running around in circles in an app that doesn't work as expected.
I'm not a huge fan of the ISP folks by any means. But in this case they win and Netgear loses. I bought a piece of Netgear equipment years ago that also caused me grief and so I definitely learned my lesson and will stay away from this company's products going forward.
I'm highly suspicious now the of the answers I've received here. Seems to be a gang that likes to blame the ISPs for everything and can't be open-minded enough to admit otherwise.
And it's not a new toy by the way and it shows a lack of respect that you would say that. It's an important piece of equipment, not a volleyball. I've gone from thinking you were extremely helpful to realizing you're just another snotty know-it-all who likes to put others down for asking legitimate questions and calling companies out when appropriate. I'm turning off the replies to this and I won't be back and that's directly because of you.

You have the C6250?
There is no firmware update. Cable ISPs don't allow it.
If your firmware is outdated, you cannot manually upgrade your cable modem’s or modem router’s firmware. You must contact your Internet service provider (ISP) to upgrade your firmware.

Just another update on this. Internet service provider is here now they clearly told me they would not control the firmware updates because it's my equipment. Maybe I didn't make that clear in my original post but this is my modem. If I can't find a way to update the firmware then I'm just going to have to switch to something that isn't Netgear.

That's just the ISPs being evil. They want to charge you to rent a modem from them.Firmware updates are in their hands, regardless of who sold it to you.
If an ISP won't roll out firmware for third-party modems, there's a good chance that they won't update their own devices. Many ISPs are staffed by people who have poor technical knowledge. Their default response is "blame the customer".
If I can't find a way to update the firmware then I'm just going to have to switch to something that isn't Netgear. Before you do that, investigate their stand on firmware. They are all the same. Other brands cannot update your firmware. It is an industry thing.
Now you can appreciate why experienced users buy separate modems and routers. Not only do you get a better choice of routers, you get to control the firmware on the bit that matters.
- buckwormNov 13, 2021TutorThanks very much. Your information is quite helpful. So should I have bought a modem and router that are separate instead of a combination unit? I have an experience in technology I am a senior systems analyst but you are not being very clear here but that might be because my experience isn't specifically in this area. Like I said I don't think it's the firmware anyway they are outside right now on a ladder trying to check on a few things but I still like to know.

There's not much on the firmware front that will change the modem side. The problem is with the router bit. If you can't update that firmware, then you miss out on new features and security updates.
- buckwormNov 13, 2021TutorAnother thing I want to express is my frustration with Netgear as far as being able to get this information in the first place. Not every user is experienced enough to even understand that they have an option to get their own modem and router like I did. You don't have to go with the equipment that a cable company gives you. I knew that much. However I didn't know the specific details that were getting into now about firmware and such and it's not my job to do that. I get paid piles of money as a system analyst but in a specific area unrelated to this. I shouldn't have to spend so much time fighting with the nighthawk app and searching the Netgear site to get the information that you've given me which has been wonderful and helpful.

Have you visited the product pages of the other brands of cable modem? Do they scream "we can't change your firmware"?
Most makers of cable modems don't even have support communities like this with the sort of information you were directed to earlier on. Their users have an even harder time than you did.
When did you last get something in a box that said "This bit won't work on your new toy"?
