What is the model number of your router? Look on the label.
Netgear Nighthawk X4S
AC2600
Model: R7800
Make sure your mobile device where you are running the smart plug application is connected to the same Wi-Fi band as the smart plug. Most likely the 2.4 GHz band.
Selecting which band is part of the setup process for the plug. I did try setting the plug up out in the shed as well just in case it was trying to use 5g and I couldn't see it. The shed is out of range for 5g.
Physically how close is the smart plug you are trying to setup located from the router?
Only a few feet with no obstructions

You missed the point about the mobile device being connected to the 2.4 GHz band before you attempt to run the setup application. Your mobile device cannot be connected to the 5 GHz band when you are attempting to setup the plug to the 2.4 GHz band.

Ah, now I get what you're saying. I double checked and my phone was connected to 2.4.
