Like antinode says, the "xfinity hotspot" probably isn't yours. I haven't found any netgears modems that have the xfinity hotspot integrated.

When Comcast does an install the modem/router also has a Xfinity hotspot option that they leave on. Supposed to be there for Comcast customers to connect to when not home. Like has been said, this is a neighbor that has the hot spot. Cannot block usage at your house.

Interesting that everyone had the same answer that it isn't my own modem. It definitely IS my modem that is open/not-secured, and it is not that of any of my neighbors. I know this because if I unplug the modem, then I consistently lose the ability to connect to that wifi hotspot. I was already aware that Xfinity provides this as a service to communities and my first call was to them, but they said that it is something that can be controled only on the modem itself, not simply through my Xfinity account.
If anyone knows how to make the free xfinity hotspot either unavailable or password-protected, I'd appreciate the help. Thanks
